Thotyssey: Jay, hello! How was your January?

Jay Alexander: My January has been long but fun, started 2025 off on a good note for sure. I was able to bring my music to a couple new bars and clubs around the city, and I’m excited for what’s in store!

How might you describe your DJ sound today?

High energy circuit and tribal underground music that’ll keep you dancing all night long!

Can you tell us a bit about where your from, and what kind of music you grew up with?

My background is Colombian and I grew up in Miami, Florida until two years ago and then decided it was time to change it up and moved to NYC. I grew up listening to all kinds of music such as pop, rap, house, and Latin; I incorporate all of these genres into my DJ style.

How did you first become a DJ, and what was your first gig?

I became a DJ because I was inspired when I heard one of my favorite DJ’s Nina Flowers play at the Manor in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Since then, I knew I wanted to not only DJ but produce circuit music. My first gig was at Southern Nights in Wilton Manors, and that’s when Jay Alexander was born.

What do you think of the state of circuit parties today?

I think that circuit parties have grown a lot from when they first started and continue to; just within the past couple of years they have expanded, and now there are multiple international circuit parties that are huge.

The circuit crowd is amazing. Not only do they support the DJs and parties, but they are kind of their own community and family… and it’s nice to see everyone come together to the sounds of music!

Hooking up must be easy for a DJ in the circuit scene, but actual dating and having a social life in general must be a challenge with the hours you keep.

I will agree with you on that; however, everything’s in balance. I do work full time in healthcare apart from DJing, so balancing my schedule and hours is a must. Dating can be challenging depending on who you’re with. I think that it is possible when you are with the right person who also supports you, it can work.

So you’ve got some local gigs coming up in February. First up, it’s Antonio Cedeno’sWorship” at Red Eye on Saturday!

You don’t want to miss it! I have a lot of new music that I’ve prepared, and Antonio’s events are always known for a sexy fun time for sure!

Then on Sunday night / Monday morning February 17th, you’ll be back for another Antonio Cedeno event: “Oscuro After Hours,” this time at the Copacabana. Lots of great DJs on that lineup!

Yes, I am really excited for February 17th! This is a never seen first time event with a massive lineup at a brand new venue! I am excited to share the stage with all of these DJs, some of which are good friends of mine, and all come together to deliver an unforgettable moment!

Anything else?

I then after go to Hawaii for a circuit party, and then finish up the month in Miami for Winter Party which I am super excited about! And check out my SoundCloud to hear some of my sets.

Lastly: we’re heading into what will be, to say the least, a challenging year for all of us. What are your music suggestions for people to be listening to when they need to forget their troubles for a bit?

Find music that motivates you or uplifts your spirit. Being a DJ, I think that is the part I most like–being able to create a vibe and create something genuine that will bring people together!

Thanks, Jay!
