Thotyssey: Hello, Takita! So 2025 is so far turning out about as crazy as we thought it would, but overall how did the first month treat you personally?

Takita Limon: Thank you so much for having me! January has definitely kept me busy with juggling ballroom and drag, but I honestly wouldn’t have it any other way!

Excellent! Would you say you keep your Ballroom self and your Drag self very separate, or do you kind of think of it as the same type of presentation, just in different locations?

Oh definitely the same type of presentation… just a different audience! When going into the ballroom scene I definitely went in with the mindset of wanting to showing off my talent of sewing and designing, and just strictly focus on building up my skills and learning within that community. It’s also been so rewarding in return.

Can you tell us a bit about where you’re from, and how you started as a performer and artist while growing up?

Oh absolutely! So I’m originally from Tennessee, and I currently reside in Hoboken, NJ going on a little over two years now. I actually started doing drag shortly after I moved to Jersey. Growing up, I was raised in a very religious environment (Jehovah’s Witness), so I didn’t really get a chance to fully express myself until I was 19-20. Around that age is when I found out about drag and queer art, and started finding my own community, and learning about my own self. From that point on, Takita was forged!

Did anyone or anything in particular inspire your name?

So I got my drag name from a Mortal Kombat character named Takeda; ever since I heard the name, I felt drawn and eventually decided, this is it, this is the name, lol.

Werrrrq! We’ve seen you tear it up in a number of competitions and guest spots over the past year or so. Does anything stand out to you as a favorite performance moment so far?

I would honestly say one of my most fun and exciting performances yet has to be when I performed at Bushwig last summer. That performance will always hold a special place in my heart!

How might you describe your drag to folks who haven’t seen you yet?

I like to describe my performance style as pretty well versed! I love a high energy number, but sometimes I like to slow it down a bit and give something a little sexy and intimate–and if I feel like telling a story, I’m going to give you an emotional ballad. Lastly and most importantly, the makeup is always going to be polished and sharp!

How do drag show audiences differ from ballroom audiences, do you think? And are you part of a Haus?

Ballroom audiences, I would definitely say, are more intense than a typical drag show… mainly being because in ballroom you are being judged by the entire room, so it’s a lot more pressure in a sense. I am in what is called a KiKi house–it’s the international Iconic Haus of Pink Lady!

Some of these looks and gowns you’ve created for yourself are quite incredible! When did you start seeing… and do you do commissions for other girls?

OMG, thank you so much! I actually started teaching myself how to sew during the pandemic, and I just kept practicing and teaching myself new techniques. Over the course of many projects, I’ve just gotten better and better! I do in fact do commissions every now and then; I try to avoid making it a job, and more just having fun with it! It makes things a lot more manageable and stress free!

You’ve got some appearances coming up. This Saturday, you’ll be with Inita D and fellow guest Harriet Tugsmen at Stonewall for “Smackdown!”

Omg yes, I love working with Inita D! I have performed at Stonewall before; it’s been a little minute. The very first time I performed at Stonewall was with Ari Kiki, and it was so much fun… and I love the crowd and the energy there!

Then on Wednesday, you and Harriet will be at Icon in Astoria, where you participated in a cycle of their competition “Pantheon!”

“Pantheon” was such an amazing experience, and honesty one of the most intense competitions out there! While I was competing, I also gained some new sisters as well.

This time you’ll be taking part in a special show called “Code BLK,” featuring none other than current RuGirl Onya Nurve! How amazing will that be?

I honesty screamed when I got asked to be a part of the show; she’s honestly one of my favorite queens! Also, Icon has a special place in my heart as well–so being able to perform there while also doing a show with one of my favorite queens is going to be an experience!

What else is coming up for you?

Later this month I’m also working with an amazing performer who I absolutely love, which is Freeda Kulo–I’m excited to work with her again!

Excellent! Okay lastly: what is your favorite item in your drag bag, cosmetic or otherwise?

OMG, my lip gloss! I have to have a glossy lip at all time, it’s an absolute must have!

Thanks, Takita!
