A marine enchantress rises from the Haus of Tsunami to drown you with sultry stage sorcery. Prepare your minds for Luna Sea!

Thotyssey: Hi Luna, thanks for chatting today! How has April been treating you so far?

Luna Sea: April has been great so far! I got to really take time and work on new things, prepping for a performance tomorrow at Hush for “Reinas” and my drag mother Nani Tsunami’s birthday show on Tuesday at VERS.

All amazing! Let’s take a moment to discuss the recent Drag Race finale before we get to the big stuff! What were your thoughts on the winner, the looks and numbers, etc.?

OMG, this finale was really interesting because to me it really could have gone to either Nymphia or Sapphira. I was definitely rooting for Nymphia, so it was exciting to see her win. That being said, I enjoyed Sapphira’s individual number the most out of the three. I thought it was the most engaging and theatrical. But favorite looks always go to Nymphia. She truly has one of the most precise senses of style that I really love. Overall, I was sad for miss Plane. I enjoyed her all season and thought she did very well. It was a really good season!

Agreed! I’m actually not super hyped about All-Stars yet, probably because this season just felt like a fully balanced meal and I’m stuffed. Are you excited to see anyone this All-Stars, though?

Im definitely rooting for Roxxxy Andrews and Gottmik! But I also agree, I think I need a bit of time before the next, lol. And I heard they’re playing for charity this season, so I don’t know how I feel about that.

Same! Fuck charity, lol!

So, now to the queen of the hour: Luna! Where are you from originally, and what sort of things were you into that may have ultimately put you on the drag path?

Im originally from Phoenix, Arizona but I was born in Mexico. I moved here when I was very little. It’s been an adjustment going from living in 100 degree weather to somewhere with all four seasons!

I have always been an artistic person, so growing up I was really into drawing. I would draw a lot of fierce cunty ladies–and in a way, living through the drawings. That ultimately translated to putting what was on paper onto my face.

I was also very into youth theater, and I took it very seriously, lol! But it was through there that I learned about acting, dancing, and overall being comfortable on stage. It was also through there that I picked up sewing skills; I used to costume design for youth shows once I outgrew the stage. I love performing, I love creating… so when I put all those things together, drag was really the answer. It combines all the things I love.

How did New York, and drag, come into your life?

It’s been about two years now both in New York and performing in drag. I did one performance in Phoenix before moving here, but before that it was really just me practicing makeup… so It doesn’t count! I was between moving here and LA… and I’d gone to California, so I decided to give New York a try. That, and my roommates wanted to move here as well… so that made it easier. I had visited NY before, and I really did fall in love with the idea of coming here. It’s been a crazy but amazing two years!

When did Nani become your Mom, and what is House of Tsunami life like?

Oh, I’m not too sure [when Nani became my drag mother]. I think it’s been more than a year now. It just sort of happened, and it feels like it’s been longer for sure. Being a Tsunami has been a lot of fun! Getting to grow along side other entertainers that are passionate about this art form is something that has been so special to me. I’ve learned so much. We all have really busy schedules, so It’s tough getting us all together.

How would you describe the sort of drag you do today in your young career, as far as looks and numbers go?

I try and do a lot more theatrical moments as of late. I did a month at [Hush drag competition] “Mother”with Maddelynn Hatter, and it really allowed me to play around with visuals to go with my numbers. Creating projections and video has been really fun, and lets me explore different concepts. And as for looks: I’ve always leaned into a more dark, vampy aesthetic, but I’m trying to play more with the ocean theme around my name. So, doing some more aquatic inspired looks.

I saw you compete at VERS’ “Get Schooled” competition a while back… that was fun! Did you enjoy that and other competition experiences, or do they cause anxiety for you?

I love doing competitions! Getting to meet new performers and kind of having a theme was always fun. I think it was more anxiety inducing when I was doing the “Mother” finale in January. It was a lot of moving parts, and I was doing most everything myself… so I was definitely stressed. It was a great experience, but I was relieved once it was done!

Like you said earlier, you’ll be back at VERS on Tuesday for the birthday edition of Nani Tsunami’s “GRRRL On Gworl!” That should be a fun show, right?

Yes, absolutely! We have a lot of fun things planned, and of course getting to celebrate Nani is going to be a moment!

What else is coming up for you?

Mainly, I have a lot of fun looks planned… so be on the lookout for that! I’m exploring a lot of ideas that I’ve been really wanting to do for a while, but haven’t had the time / skill to accomplish. And of course, just performing as much as I can around the city!

Lastly: what’s your favorite item in your drag bag?

Favorite item is definitely blush! You can never have too much, and I feel like if it came down to it, I could do a full look with blush. And I just might!

No doubt! Thanks, Luna!
