On Point With: Miss Woman The Woman

March and April 2024 will be busy months for Brooklyn’s lady-tastic Miss Woman the Woman… and no doubt there will be lots more to come. [Cover photo: Cheeks Voila]

Thotyssey: Hey there Miss Woman, thanks for chatting with us today! How is March treating you so far?

Miss Woman the Woman: Hello Thotyssey! My March has been absolutely fantastic. I produced my first show at Purgatory, “Shart Tank” and I’m looking forward to creating more whacky, fantastical shows as the weather gets warmer and the Brooklynites come out of hibernation.

“Shart Tank” was largely an improv showcase, right?

Yeah! It was a blend of improv comedy, lip sync performances and video content. We also included a drag roulette component, where the business negotiations were actually song negotiations (i.e. “I’ll invest $300,000 in your business if you perform “Untouched” by the Veronicas while pretending to have severe stomach issues)–truly an extravaganza. “Shart Tank” was definitely a splashing success. It was also my first time collaborating with Mx. Ology, a newer artist on the scene; they are an absolutely fascinating artist, and we both have a lot of the same reference points in our drag, so things came very naturally. The entire cast was really down to clown, which made things really easy on the day of the performance. We’re hoping to do a second installment in May!

Is improv a big part of your drag today?

Improv comedy is definitely a big part of my performance style. I was actually the president of my improv team in college, and I use those skills anytime I’m on the mic hosting a show. I think a part of being a great drag entertainer is reading the room, and intentionally interacting with the space and the people that fill it.

How else might you describe your overall drag, as far as looks and numbers go?

Very campy and absurd. I often like to put Miss Woman in different theatrical situations, and have my performances unravel like a scene or a play. I take a lot of inspiration from artists like Divine, Peaches Christ and Kate Berlant. I make most of what I wear, and I try to dress myself like a Cartoon Network character.

Where are you from originally, and how / when did you become Miss Woman?

I was born and raised in Dallas, TX. I would say Miss Woman was birthed in my childhood bedroom around age 11. I used to secretly perform Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream” top to bottom, outfitting myself with my mother’s stolen heels and my sister’s makeup. I got the name “Miss Woman” from my best friend a couple years later. While studying theatre in Boston, I experimented with drag here and there… but I feel like the most fully realized version of Miss Woman hit the Brooklyn drag scene in March of 2023.

My drag is very much a way for me to connect with my inner child. I’ve always enjoyed imagining myself as this larger than life female character, and now I get to play out those childhood fantasies in real life.

There’s so much drag in the city these days. Is the crowded scene difficult to navigate, or are you able to easily find your place in it all?

To be honest, it has been a little difficult to find my place in the NYC drag scene; there are so many different subsections and pockets of NYC drag that it can get overwhelming. The city is home to so many fascinating artists, and I find that I meet new, interesting people every time I go out. However, I do feel like I am most in my element when I’m creating opportunities and spaces to showcase the talents of my friends.

Speaking of showcasing talent, Brooklyn recording artist / event producer Senerio and I are excited that you’re going to compete in our first ever installment of the “Queer Talent Show,” Sunday March 24th at Metro! There’s a great lineup of talent on the bill competing for a cash prize… it should be a great night!

Yes! I’m totally looking forward to it. I have a couple of friends in the show that I’m looking forward to seeing, and I can’t wait to see what everyone brings to the show. I love it when drag gets to be showcased alongside other art forms, so it’s a night I’m really looking forward to.

What else is coming up for you?

I’ll be appearing in “Shayaya” presented by Melissa Harris at the Brooklyn Art Haus (03/29)…

…”Clown Cult” hosted by Chuckie Sleaze at Purgatory (03/31)…

…”Parched” hosted by the House of Quench (04/05)…

…and “Sparkle Tits Variety Show” at Pine Box Rock Shop hosted by Tootsie Lewd and Cheeks Voila (04/14).

And there’s a Kate Bush show in the works too, right?

Yes! My show “Kate Bush: Queen Cult” is in the making, currently. It is going to take place on 04/24 at Pink Metal and I’m in the process of casting right now. I wanted to do this show to give all the “LoveHounds” a time and place to jam out to their favorite songs. I’m looking to curate a sort of fan club vibe, and any artist that wants to perform will be allowed to.

All great things coming up! Okay, lastly… if you’re following Drag Race, who do you think is getting crowned now?

My brain is telling me Sapphira Cristal, but my gut is telling me Nymphia Wind.

Time will tell which organ is correct! Thanks, Miss Woman!
