Thotyssey: Hello, Luxx! How are you doing this Quarantine Day, aka every day?

Luxx Noir London: I wish I was out responsibly enjoying the weather… however, I am at work today!

Oh bummer! At least you have work, though… this city is pretty difficult to navigate these days.

True! Very grateful for that! I actually live in New Jersey, but I have been in the city a few times since quarantine and I have to say that things definitely feel different.

Are you a Jersey gurl born and raised?

Yep! I’ve lived in East Orange, New Jersey my whole life!

Were you always into fashion and performance while growing up?

Yes! I actually vividly remember me writing that I wanted to be a fashion designer on those little “what do you want to be when you grow up?” things in the first grade. I think my mom still has the drawing! I’ve been performing most of my life, actually. I majored in musical theater from seventh grade to now. And I’ve always had an obsession with music and pop culture.

How did you discover drag?

Through my aunt, actually. She was watching the Drag Race Season 3 casting special back when it first aired, and I kinda just resonated with what I saw on the a screen. Years passed and I discovered Drag Race once again, and I was hooked ever since.

And then when did you become a queen yourself?

I started wearing beauty makeup in 2018, but started doing drag when a best friend of mine put me in drag for the first time a couple months later, and I never looked back!

I honestly haven’t heard of you until recently (my loss), but your Insta is that of queen who is at the top of her makeup game, with a highly editorial layout. How did you get so skilled?

Thank you so much! I’ve always been a super artistic child, so I’ve been drawing and paining for forever. I also was (and still am) a really big Halloween “enthusiast,” so I would always do my makeup for my costumes and stuff. Fun fact: I wanted to go to school to study special FX makeup!

But as far as drag makeup, I just practice a lot! I still do. I always find time to work on it, whether it’s me physically doing my makeup, watching tutorials, or just looking at things for inspiration.

How did you drag name yourself?

Well at first, my name was going to be Kitty Noir… but I wanted my name to be something that really represented the aesthetic I wanted to give, which was black luxury and opulence. So originally my name was going to be Luxury Noir, but I felt like “Luxury” was too long… so I shortened it to Luxx. I chose two X’s because I wanted my first and last name to be the same amount of letters. The “London” was added because of my drag mother / sister, Princess London! Ironically, London is one of the fashion capitals of the world and I love fashion!

What have been some of your favorite gigs you’ve done?

One is definitely “Black Girl Magic,” which is hosted by The Vixen. It was such a surreal experience, because it’s a show that I wanted to be a part of for so long.

And how about a favorite number you’ve performed?

It would have to be a mix that I made called “Fashion.” It’s a mix of “The Fame” and “Fashion” by Lady Gaga, “Wet Dollars” by Tink, and a remix of “Covergirl” by RuPaul. There’s also some iconic Naomi Campbell quotes thrown in there, too!

In general, what do you think of digital drag versus actual live drag? Can you  make a digital show work easily, or is it a Carry?

I definitely prefer performing live, but I don’t hate digital drag. I feel like I can be more creative with digital drag, but the adrenaline that performing live gives me is unmatched.

You’ve certainly got some great digital stuff coming up, starting this coming Tuesday! You’ll be part of Drag Race All-Star Monique Heart’s monthly revue “Haus of Heart” on Twitch! How much do we live for Monique?

I love Monique! I’ve been obsessed with her since she first entered the Werkroom. She’s an icon, she’s a legend, and she is the moment! Okay? I’m so excited to be a part of this show, and I can’t wait for everyone to see what the other performers and myself have cooked up!

And then next Sunday you’ll be back on Twitch with “Slurp!” hosted by Lucia Fuchsia and Sterling, featuring Amanda Lepore, Honey Davenport, Sherry Vine and so many other great queens. That’s gonna be the ticket!

Oh, I am so excited for that! It’s truly going to be an event!

And then Friday, August 28th is yet another Twitch queen pile-on: the Poké Ball! That’s gonna be Nerd-tastic. Do you live for a certain Pokémon?

Yes! Can’t wait for that! I love Pokémon! My favorite is so basic, but it’s Pikachu. They’re just so fierce and iconic, so I relate to them! Lol!

What else do the kids need to know?

I just want to let everyone know to keep wearing a mask, Black Lives Matter, VOTE this October / November and TIP ME! Venmo: luxxnoirlondon

Lastly, what’s your best advice for a new queen on the scene?

Trust the journey, always give 100%, practice practice practice, have fun, and don’t take anyone’s advice!

That’s the best advice, lol! Thanks, Luxx!
