On Point With: Cyb3r Bull

An oft-masked music producer and DJ with a deliciously dark sound and major party brand, Cyb3r Bull is dropping an epic debut EP… with a killer release party to boot.

Thotyssey: Cyb3r, hello! Thanks for chatting today! How’s your summer been so far… and even though it’s still a bit early, are you excited for the Spooky Season?

Cyb3r Bull: Thank you for having me! Summer has been great so far, but very excited for spooky season, my favorite time of the year.

Same! You already have a collection of sinister masks that you often wear to gigs, lol… were you always wearing those in the booth, or did that come later?

Haha, that came later actually! Most DJs have their -isms when they play, and that comes from being very focused. When I would see videos of myself I noticed I do weird things with my mouth when I play, so initially it started with just a mouth mask… then I got an idea, and made the full mask. I live for accessories.

How might you describe your DJ sound today, on the nights you have compete control over what we hear?

Dark but fun. Very techno focused with tribal and industrial elements, plus a splash of hardgroove and hard house because I love how it blends with techno. It’s all the sounds I tried to encapsulate in my upcoming debut EP.

Put a pin in that cuz we wanna hear all about that! But first, let’s step back to the origin story: where are you from originally, and was music always part of your life growing up?

I was born in Guadalajara, Mexico but grew up in Long Island, New York and South Florida. I would say music saved me, and was my first love — because growing up as an immigrant child that didn’t speak English I didn’t have many friends for a while, so music was my comfort place. Also, my mom is a passionate Latina that would blast her favorite music on the speakers and dance at home, so I guess subconsciously that also instilled the importance of music to me.

How and when did you begin DJing?

So funny thing is, I started producing music first — like ten years ago. I didn’t put anything out, and then I began to DJ in 2021. DJing has expanded my mind and made producing music so much different, and better, I would say.

What was that early original music like?

It was a bit all over the place. I didn’t have a real sense of direction or specific sound, so I would go with what sounded good to me at the time.

Do you often incorporate your own original music in your DJ sets?

More recently, yes! If there’s a specific sound I want to blend with techno but can’t find a similar track, then I create my own loops. I’ve been thinking about possibly putting out a small compilation of tools that I created, for other DJs to use.

You’re also a photographer who’s taken some gorgeous, dynamic images! How long have you been doing that?

Thank you! Yes I’m very grateful to be a successful published photographer for 10+ years now! Hit me up if you need a shoot!

You and your partner Xana 101 created a popular party called Euwhoria. Can you tell us about that brand, and when we might see / hear it again?

Absolutely! Euwhoria is the now and the future, birthed from Fashion and Technology in an alien planet… the euphoric feeling of sex as music. The vulgarity in the name is meant to reflect confidence. Just like how people use makeup or drag as an armor, Euwhoria is meant to be that armor for our community in nightlife. We like to create safe spaces where queer people (and the like) can enjoy themselves, listen to queer music selectors, and dress as slutty or extravagant as they’d like. Our next confirmed event will be October 3rd back at Paragon in Brooklyn, which we are very excited about!

How exciting is it that Paragon reopened this month, after seemingly closing forever in April?

It’s truly a blessing. We’ve been telling everyone how excited we are, and how much we love them. They are one of the very few venues out there in the world that truly care about music, nightlife, community, and diversity. Very rare to find; much respect to John, Stephen and team.

Tell us about the upcoming new EP, Mutation Stimulation!

This is my debut project, so I wanted to encapsulate some of my favorite sounds that I like to play. It’s a four track EP. The name of the project came while listening to track #1 named “Stimulation.” It’s a minimal, almost hypnotic progression of instruments that make up the track, and while listening back to it I imagined a movie scene of a person mutating and transforming into a werewolf very fiercely. Overall it’s dark, minimal, tribal and industrial… but with a danceable factor. I wanted it to be something DJs can blend with techno, as I don’t want to compete with the proper techno sound which I have much respect for.

Track #2 “Vitus” has some ballroom and tribal elements. My friend said it was “bringing ballroom to the underworld,” and I really loved that. Track #3 is called “Mutation,” and that seems to be another favorite from my peers I’ve shared it with. Last track is called “New Genetic,” and that’s the hardest… and probably my own personal favorite.

That all sounds like a 2025 mood! You’re gonna have a release party for the EP on Wednesday night at Bossa Nova Civic Club.

Yes it’s gonna be so fab! I’m super excited for this night — not only for my set which is composed to include all of the tracks from the EP, but also because this is a special lineup I put together of my favorite DJs and producers who’s sound resonates with the EP. It’s free all night, and everyone’s invited! Come in your favorite mutant look for extra aura points.

Wanna weigh on Lana versus Ethel, lol?

I didn’t know the girls were fighting, and now I’m gonna go read about it. But I just know Nicki just finally listened to Lana Del Rey and is getting her life, and Ethel is sadly recently cancelled for a bunch of stuff.

It’s a whole thing! Anything else coming up for you, or is there anything else you want to add?

I just wanna say that now more than ever, it is our duty as artists or anyone with influence to speak up for the injustices going on in the world… and even within communities. The era of self-centered behavior needs to be left behind if we want to evolve as a whole. You might not think your words mean anything, but there’s a lot of power in spreading (correct) information. #freepalestine #freesudan #F-ICE

Absolutely across the board! Finally: what’s your best advice to a baby DJ who wants to be Heard, and Big, in NYC?

My advice would be to: 1. Perfect your craft; 2. Focus on your brand and marketing (professional portraits and videos of you DJing are very important, so that people can have something to connect themselves to), as this is something that is overlooked or seen as vain… but at the end of the day it is marketing, and important for any business; 3. Use any opportunity to get to prove your talent regardless of what it is, because you never know who’s paying attention; 4. Be a good person and please be professional, especially in this industry. As a producer of parties, I can tell you it’s such an easy decision to not book someone again if they’re not professional or a nice person. The most successful DJs I know are professional, and such a pleasure to be around,– nine out of ten, that is why they have recurring bookings.

Oh, and lastly… please line up your tracks! It will make your life so much easier, trust me, I’m still so surprised to see that most DJs don’t think to do it.

Thanks, Cyb3r!
