In these dark days, we can all use a little Blaque Fridae in our lives; the Brooklyn queen is on the rise and slaying the game. [Cover photo: Voxigma Lo]
Thotyssey: Blaque, hello! How is February treating you?
Blaque Fridae: Hello! February is going good. The year is a bit looming, but going good. Thank you for having me.
Yes, “looming” is a good word for it. Does it feel weird to be coming up as a queen during this relatively hostile political moment?
It does. And not just as a queen–all facets of myself feel attacked, either as black, queer, HIV positive. It’s just wild right now
Especially since a drag queen is meant to spread joy and help folks forget their own troubles for a bit. On a lighter note, could you describe how your drag is today, as far as the types of looks and numbers you like to serve?
My drag today I describe as someone’s black auntie. It is very much grown and opulent, but still very banjee and sexy without apology. I do Shirley Bassey or Cardi B, and it’s great.
Where are you originally from, and how did your drag journey begin?
I’m originally from Omaha, NE. I moved to NYC in the fall of 2017 and started drag immediately when I moved here right before I turned 21. I found this old store in the Lower East Village called Haus of La Rue where I met who I consider my drag mother Leo Gugu, and it was over. I knew I needed to be this wonderful creature that is a DRAGon. So I would get in drag and tiptoe to different clubs and spaces as a drag queen. It was fab.
Fascinating! Is there anywhere for a drag queen to perform in Nebraska these days, by the way?
There are but not too many. There’s two gay bars in my hometown that offered drag shows, but now there’s one called Flixx (shoutout).
Hold it down, Flixx! I see you’ve participated in some big competitions here, like “Battle of the Jacks” at Sandy Jack’s and “Tournament of Champions,” at Hush, and I’m guessing you’ ‘ve done your share of the weeklies, too. Do you enjoy the competitive aspect of drag, or is that stressful for you?
I love showing my drag. I believe my first time actually performing was a competition; I did “DRAGnet” in 2023, and that was my first official performance as Blaque. I’m never stressed, because I know that my art is my art… and if it’s not winning, it’s entertaining and captivating. But I hope to win something one day, lol!

She’s winning every day! I saw you once perform for Poppy J. Snacks’ bingo show at Rockbar; you’re all over the place! Do you have a favorite venue here in NYC?
OMG, I love Rockbar! It’s a tie between Rockbar and Sandy Jack’s. Both have such a love for their performers and events. It’s hard to choose between them.
Speaking of Sandy, you have some shows coming up there! First is this Saturday’s “Haus of Thickness” hosted by Vampy Von Thickums Galore! That’s your sis, right?
Yes, Vampy is my good sis. She was there at “DRAGnet” when I first performed. She’s beaten me in every competition, lol! But she’s supported and cheered me on as well.

The following Saturday, February 22nd, will see you back at Jack’s, this time as a guest performer for Afrosephone Applegate and Lola Latte’s “Groove & Soul!”
It’s a tribute dance party to the New Jack Swing genre of the 90s. All Black cast, and just giving fun and community for all that want to attend.

And on the 28th, you’ll be guest hosting an improv drag comedy show “Celebrity Debate Club,” inspired by Drag Race’s “Snatch Game,” at C’mon Everybody!
Yes, I’m portraying [“Debate Club’s” usual host] Anne J. Tifah, my absolute love. I’m so ready. “Snatch Game” is my favorite thing from Drag Race, and seeing it being brought to Brooklyn is so wild and makes my heart giddy!

And then you’ll be returning to Sandy Jack’s on March 8th for a big, important event.
Yes, I’ll be doing the “Defend Us” benefit show [for GLSEN].

Is there anything to add?
To anyone that reads this: stay strong and stay together. Separation is the greatest tool people in power can use. As one we are strong.
Amen! Okay, one last question: what’s your favorite item in your drag bag, cosmetic or otherwise?
Oooh…my perfume! I need to create a full fantasy for myself and my audience, so I always have a bottle of perfume with me. It’s so delicious.
Thanks, Blaque!
