Bar Babe of the Month: Maddie at Marie’s Crisis

Singing server Maddie keeps an old tradition alive at a historic West Village venue unlike any other!

Bar(s) that I work at: Marie’s Crisis Café!

How long I’ve worked there: 3 and half years

What are my shifts: Wednesdays from 9:30-3:00 and Saturdays from 10:30-3:30.

What makes this bar great: There is simply nothing else like a dive bar with live, acoustic showtime sing-alongs all night every night.

Best drink I make: I’m a singing server, so I don’t make drinks… but my favorite song I solo on is “Changing my Major” from Fun Home.

I love it when customers: Make friends with one another. I’ve seen strangers turn into chosen family, and I’ve watched friends fall in love in this space. It’s such an honor to work somewhere that fosters that type of connection.

I hate it when customers: Are unkind. Being unkind can manifest in so many ways in the context of nightlife, but the underlying issue beyond all the specifics is that we all need to be kind to workers and fellow patrons–especially in indoor nightlife spaces right now.

Craziest thing I’ve seen here: It’s always mind-blowing to see someone I’ve paid to see on Broadway become just another patron singing along with all of us.

Other places I’ve worked: I’ve been a nanny for years, and I act in theatre things from time to time (I know, shocking). I’m a writer as well–some of my old bylines floating around Al Gore’s Internet are from Everyday Feminism, New Musical Theatre, the long-defunct SheSeekOnline lesbian app (RIP), and The RSVLTs.

My hometown: Reno, Nevada and Carlsbad, CA, depending on what you mean by “hometown.” I’ve lived in New York longer than I’ve lived anywhere else, though.

Stuff I do when I’m not bartending: I love to cook! I have a pipe dream of self-publishing a cookbook or making a very low-rent version of the Alison Roman videos I marathon-watch.

Single or Taken: Taken! My girlfriend is a 9-5er in Massachusetts, and being long-distance makes our wildly different work schedules make slightly more sense together.

Who/what turns me on: I have a huge crush on Rachel Maddow.

Favorite music: Iron Maiden, Irving Berlin, Dar Williams, Stephen Sondheim, Ezra Furman, John Cameron Mitchell, Lorde,…I could go on, but there’s only so much space.

Favorite movie or TV show: Difficult People and The Other Two are required TV viewing.

Favorite drag queen: Boudoir LeFleur, Andy Starling and Heidi Haux come to mind.

My drag name would be: Either Lex A. Pro or Andy Depressant. or ProZachariah.

Favorite gogo boy: This is like Sophie’s Choice, but with multiple former twink roommates… and I refuse to choose!

Favorite DJ: If Hot Rabbit books them, I have a good time… but it’s been a hot minute since I’ve been out dancing.

Other stuff you need to know about me: Just wanted to give a special shoutout to everyone who supported Marie’s Crisis during our Online Era, when bars were shut down in 2020. We stopped posting online content to our Facebook group in the beginning of June, and I still have people come up to me at work and tell me they watched and supported us. It is still so meaningful, and I can’t wait for our online friends from out of New York to be able to visit us.

Follow me on: Twitter and Instagram. I’m also on that handle on TikTok, but I am just so woefully bad at posting on there.

Tip me at: @Maddie-McClouskey on Venmo and PayPal
