Besides pouring the libations, he also keeps the boys in choreo as they strut their stuff on the bar for your entertainment: it’s Flaming Saddles’ adorbs Kris!
Bar that I work at: Flaming Saddles Saloon
How long I’ve worked there: Since the dawn of time [laughs]! We opened over 5 years ago, and I’ve been with Jacqui, Chris and the boys since day one.
What are my shifts: You can find me on Thursday nights, Friday nights, and Saturday nights from 8:00pm – 4:00am. As dance captain, I hold rehearsals for the boys on different mornings, but our rehearsals are closed so NO PEEKING.
What makes this bar great: We bring something completely unique and very special to the neighborhood, and to the gay scene in NYC. Flaming Saddles is like spicy food. It takes a certain palate, but most people love it, and those who love it can’t live without it. Over the years, we have cultivated such a wonderful base of regular patrons. Kindhearted people. Salt of the Earth human beings who simply want to enjoy themselves, have a laugh, a cocktail, and some eye candy.
Best drink I make: We are a no frills kind of bar. You want a nice Manhattan? I got you covered. You want a Malibu and pineapple with an umbrella? Yum Yum is right down the block.
I love it when customers: Smile. It goes such a long way.
I hate it when customers: Oh man, I’ve certainly developed some pet peeves after years in this business, but I think what makes my blood really boil the most is on a swamped weekend night, when the most impatient person in the room pushes him or herself half way over the bartop, waves in my face, gets my attention, and then turns around to ask what his or her group of friends wants to drink. I almost broke my computer just typing about it.
Craziest thing I’ve seen here: Oh LORD. During one insanely busy Saturday shift just after midnight, one of the Bandits attempted to do a turn on the bar in the middle of his dance, missing his footing coming down, and toppling backwards into a shelf of martini glasses and champagne flutes, to then brush off the broken glass and finish the damn song. Epic.
Other places I’ve worked: I’ve tried on a couple of jobs [laughs]. I have pumped gas for a living, worked at an elite bank as a catering coordinator, and served many a table in my day. But I first tended bar at a poolside at the Ferncroft Country Club in Middleton, Massachusetts the summer before I left for college.
My hometown: I’m from Peabody, MA. It’s about 20 miles north of Boston and a 5 minute drive to Salem. I’ve never hanged a witch myself, but I’ve definitely put one in her place.
Stuff I do when I’m not bartending: I like to spend my time and money on experiences that make my life feel beautiful and rich, things I’ll never forget. So I’m big on planning journeys with my friends and getting tickets to concerts and Broadway musicals as often as possible. It helps me to stay positive, and uplifted in my day-to-day life, always knowing that I have that next vacation or exciting new show I’ve been dying to see to look forward to. Oh, and I enjoy baking pies ever since Waitress: the Musical came out.
Single or Taken: Single AF. I want something real, and I’m willing to wait for it.
Who/what turns me on: Hairy, chubby dudes. Honestly, the bigger and more confident, the better. I also LOVE men who smell good and eat good food. MMMMM!
Favorite music: I don’t even know where to begin. Music is a humongous part of my life, as I grew up playing piano and doing musical theatre. I spend countless hours browsing for new artists and tunes of almost every genre. But right now when it’s already beginning to feel like spring, I need my “bitch, put some pep in that step”candy ass pop music. Give me Little Mix EVERY DAY. Though if I had to name one favorite artist, it would be Sara Bareilles far and away. She’s never written a song I don’t love, and has ACTUALLY gotten me through shit with her amazing gift as a songwriter.
Favorite movie or TV show: A League of Their Own and Sex and the City. No brainer. I fucking love women and I’m super-sensitive. Duh.
Favorite drag queen: It would literally be my social suicide to name ONE favorite drag queen at this point in my life working in Hell’s Kitchen. The HK queens are some of my dearest friends and best customers, so I can just see them getting in formation, plotting and carrying out my “untimely” death, painting my face for my open casket wake, and then taking turns doing death drops on my grave.
My drag name would be: Fiona Snapple. She only comes out once a year, but we have FUN together.
Favorite gogo boy: Couldn’t name one if you put loaded dick to my head.
Favorite DJ: Aw, my buddy DJ Steven Paul. I remember one day at FLY Sundays a couple of summers ago, a bunch of my friends showed up not knowing that he would be spinning, and we had the most unbelievable dance party to his entire set, only stopping to pee or drink more. He just does it right.
Other stuff you need to know about me: I love my little family in Massachusetts more than anything on this planet, and I know that I am a lucky boy to have them.
Follow me on (social media): Instagram, which I really should use more. I’m still such a Facebook baby.
