On Point With: Boston Chery

A major NYC DJ who’s spinning a big Pride Weekend gig as well as parties all over the world, Boston Chery is truly blossoming this summer.

Thotyssey: Hi Boston! How is Pride Week treating you so far?

Boston Chery: Hello! This Pride Week has been the most exciting one I’ve had in a while! Just amazing vibes everywhere, and excitement to celebrate and be outside. It feels like the most outside and excitement since before the pandemic.

I agree! New York is a great Pride town. Have you gotten to do a lot of traveling as a DJ yet? If so, do you have a favorite Other City?

Yes! I’ve traveled the world with DJng, and wish to travel some more. My favorite place is Canada! I can’t say which city but Toronto and Montreal has become my second home.

Beautiful cities! So is Boston… that’s where you were born, right?

Lol, yes I was born in Massachusetts.

And you were raised in NYC. That means you were probably constantly surrounded by music!

Yup raised in Brooklyn, New York. I grew up around so many genres of music; it definitely influenced my DJ style.

How might you describe your sound today?

I would describe it as the sounds of the summer: Afrobeats, always love R&B, Jersey Club, Zouk, Raboday.

And how did you get your start DJing?

I started in college, with me playing music out loud from my laptop all the time and people liking my music taste. Then my friend’s mom had told me I should be a DJ, and my life calling of bringing people together with music clicked.

Is there a difference between queer and straight dance floors in your opinion, as far as how people behave or respond to your music?

Huge difference, lol! I feel like the queers dance more and experiment more. Both crowds respond well to my DJng.

You have a nightlife brand called Club 888.

Yes, it started two years ago. I started it as a party from my label The 8th Path, which highlights BIPOC DJs and producers from all over the world. The party is a space to play everything; it’s for music lovers.

And you preside over “The She Party,” which I think is monthly at “dyke bar” The Bush!

Yes! I’m actually rebranding “The She Party.” I had it running since 2018 at Luv Story which is closing now, and bringing it over to The Bush has been amazing . But as I’m changing, evolving and becoming more aware of myself and values, I’m ready for this change as well.

By the way, you did Boiler Room, which is a famous and prestigious live and digital platform for fans to hear / see major DJ sets! What was that experience like?

Yes, it was amazing! I did it twice, and the vibe and connection to the people is pretty beautiful. Boiler Room was one of my big goals as a DJ; I’m so happy I was able to do that.

You and DJ Adair b2b as Global Warming.

Yes, and we have our lovely host Trae! It’s been amazing… we’ve been doing it for six years now. I’m really proud of how much we’ve grown and built together.

Global Warming is on the bill for “Sorbae Pride” this Saturday night, recently relocated to the Brooklyn Monarch! What do you think this night is gonna sound like?

All global sounds! Things to make people dance and feel good, liberated and sexy.

Glorious! What else is coming up for you?

My birthday is next month, so I’m “trying” to relax more, lol. I’m working on some new music, remixes and graphic design work. I do have a really fun gig with Out N Bad July 28th, and also a few other ones throughout the month.

Last question: what’s been the song of the summer for you so far, if there is one?

Right now it’s “Favorite Girl” by Darkoo and Des’s Dior!

Thanks, Boston!
