Bar Babe of the Month: Oscar at Nowhere

“Chesticles” host, fashionista and longtime bar babe Oscar Avila makes his home at Nowhere.

Bar(s) that I work at: Nowhere Bar

How long I’ve worked there: 4 years

What are my shifts: “Macho Mondays” at 10pm; every other Thursday 10pm (see “Chesticles” party); Fridays 10pm

What makes this bar great: The regulars. They have become a support system for me, even in my outside endeavors.

Best drink I make: I make a mean beer / shot combo

I love it when customers: start with a hello. Might be a cultural thing, but greeting and acknowledging someone’s presence goes a long way.

I hate it when customers: don’t know their limits. I get it, we’ve all had our moments… but when it’s constant, like… alright please, get it together.

Craziest thing I’ve seen here: I’ve seen crazy, I’ve encouraged crazy, haha. It wasn’t necessarily crazy, but recently during the party I co-host called “Chesticles” there was someone getting serviced next to the bar, a doll getting trade by the fire place, and someone else enjoying a juicy peach on the other end. All I thought was, what have I done!? I’m glad people felt comfortable to be that free.

Other places I’ve worked: Parkside Lounge (support queer owned bars), and guest bartended at Club Lambda (support black queer owned bars).

My hometown: Fort Worth, Texas

Stuff I do when I’m not bartending: Uff! I work in fashion during the day, recently I made my stage debut at a stage reading of a play A Perfect Relationship in Bushwick by Adrian Crawford at Dixon Place in the LES.

Single or Taken: Single

Who/what turns me on: My 3 C’s: Confidence, Curiosity, Cultura. A person that knows who they are, where they come from, and harnesses that energy to propel themselves in life. Be curious about life. What a turn on!

Favorite music: Love songs. From Selena Quintanilla to Jill Scott, I’m a sucker for love songs.

Favorite movie or TV show: Moonlight. No gay film has shook me to my core. There were a lot of parallels in that story with my own upbringing.

Favorite drag queen: It changes from time to time, but I can honestly say my favorite drag queen of all time is Kelexis Davenport from Dallas. Kelexis is a legend, spicy, shady and a PERFORMER.

My drag name would be: During the pandemic I coined, Purella De Vil.

Favorite gogo boy: Zaddy Luu! That’s my #1

Favorite DJ: Noble Bear , I love him.

Other stuff you need to know about me: I am known for my style, and my unwavering commitment to being a complete loose cannon. I love life, and I try my best to find joy in everything.
