As we approach the 52nd anniversary of the historical Sip-In at NYC’s longest-running gay bar (and national landmark) Juius’, let’s get into it with resident pourmaster Justin!
Bar that I work at: Julius’ in the West Village.
How long I’ve worked there: Been there 2.5 years and love it!
What are my shifts: Tuesdays till 8ish pm, and sometimes I cover Wednesdays.
What makes this bar great: its history and clientele. I’ve never been to a bar where every one engages in conversation with each other regardless of age/sex/race. It really is like a gay Cheers. (Also, the famous burgers of course!)
Best drink I make: Tequila cosmos or negronis. Delicious.
I love it when customers: say please and thank you. Seriously, manners go a long way.
I hate it when customers: act entitled or demand their drinks strong. It’s tacky.
Craziest thing I’ve seen here: I haven’t seen really crazy stuff at my bar mostly because i do Tuesday days but crazies do wonder in from time to time. I don’t mind it for the most part because it makes my shift colorful (to say the least.)
Other places I’ve worked: I use to work at the 9th Ave Saloon in HK and the Crown & Anchor in Provincetown on Cape Cod,
My hometown: Yarmouth (which is forty minutes from Provincetown)
Stuff I do when I’m not bartending: flying the friendly skies with JetBlue. One hobby of mine is definitely photography, and I’m a big walker. I walk everywhere.
Single or Taken: I am single and love it.
Who/what turns me on: Straight blue collar guys that drink Budweiser.
Favorite music: Britney Spears and 90’s alternative rock. When you come in to my bar, that’s what you will hear on the radio.
Favorite movie or TV show: Buffy the Vampire Slayer, 24, Broad City, Law & Order SVU, Schitts Creek, Gossip Girl, and Golden Girls.
Favorite drag queen: Miss Richfield 1981
My drag name would be: the few times I’ve done drag–and i use that term loosely–my name was Tuna Portion
Favorite gogo boy: I don’t go to places with gogo boys
Favorite DJ: I also don’t go places with DJs. I like my bars divey.
Other stuff you need to know about me: When you come and see me on Tuesdays, just keep in mind that I am incredibly inappropriate but in a fun way, and extremely friendly. I love meeting new people and making new friends.
